The fact that this country, 50 years after the civil rights movement, still fights over giving everyone the rights they deserve, is shameful. This nation should be beyond trying to enforce “separate but equal.” We should be beyond trying to deny rights to individuals based on nothing but prejudice and bigotry. And until the day we are beyond that, to call ourselves a “progressive” nation is a punchline to a joke no one wants to hear anymore.
